Project 2: Sense of Place

Recap

Through this project, we are required to utilise and apply the design principles we have learnt in order to express a location of our choice. The place becomes the subject of the composition in which the design principles are applied to capture the social and environmental aspects. 

Visual References

When exploring the concept of a sense of space, I found that there were limited accurate visual references that could fully capture and describe the specific sense of space I am comfortable with. However, to aid in conveying my vision, I turned to a 3D modeling software to create visual representations.

When it comes to capturing the essence of our personal spaces, visual references play a crucial role. However, in my case, I never had the opportunity to photograph my own room, as it was a private sanctuary that I cherished back in my hometown. But that didn't deter me from finding a creative solution to express my sense of space. By delving into the realm of 3D modeling, I discovered a captivating way to bring my dream room to life and create a visual representation that closely aligns with my personal style and aspirations.

Real Life References

Although there is a scarcity of direct visual references for the specific idea I have envisioned, I have come across a few rooms that capture the essence of my desired aesthetic and gaming-focused design. While these rooms may not perfectly align with my exact vision, they embody the elements and style that resonate with my gaming preferences and provide a source of inspiration. 

By selecting and combining these gaming-centric references, I aim to create a unique space that reflects my passion for gaming and offers an immersive experience. These visual references serve as a foundation for my design exploration, guiding me in shaping the layout, furniture choices, and overall atmosphere of the room I aspire to create.

The following references I have taken from real life were provided by Pinterest. I had included them as part of my foundation for an essence of space. And to serve as visual references for my own design.

3D References

Using the 3D modeling software allowed me to bring my ideas to life in a more tangible and realistic manner. Through the manipulation of shapes, textures, lighting, and perspectives, I was able to simulate different spatial arrangements and compositions. While these visual references may not precisely match my ideal sense of space, they served as a starting point for further exploration and development.

Although the modeled room may not replicate my current living environment precisely, it serves as a tangible representation of my sense of space and the ambiance I aspire to create. Through the power of 3D modeling, I could experiment freely, giving shape to my dreams and showcasing elements that encompassed peace, comfort, practicality, and a touch of personal style.

Within my 3D model, I've carefully designed a space that combines comfort, productivity, and recreation. The room features an adjacent setup of my bed and gaming area, allowing for easy transitions between relaxation and immersive gaming experiences. This arrangement reflects my desire for a dedicated space that caters to my hobbies and provides a sense of convenience.

In the center of the room, I have a well-equipped workspace that serves as a focal point for my creative and professional pursuits. It's designed to promote concentration and productivity, offering a dedicated area where I can focus and accomplish tasks effectively. On the opposite end, there's a versatile recreation space with a cozy couch and a spacious cabinet, providing an inviting area for relaxation, entertainment, and leisure activities.

Overall, my 3D model embodies a harmonious blend of comfort, functionality, and personal expression. It's a space that caters to my needs, enabling me to relax, work, and enjoy recreational activities seamlessly.

Design Principle

In my design process, I have chosen to focus on the principles of harmony and unity. Harmony ensures a balanced arrangement of elements, while unity creates a cohesive and visually unified design. I consider the relationships between colors, shapes, and textures to achieve visual balance.

I chose to design my room as it serves as my ultimate comfort space, allowing me to thrive and work at my best. It's a sanctuary where I find solace and inspiration, and it never fails to provide me with the comfort I need to tackle any task. Within its familiar walls, I am able to unleash my creativity without limits, free from distractions and fully immersed in my work. It is a space that nurtures my productivity and empowers me to reach new levels of fulfillment.

In the idea development phase, I have chosen to design a room that captures the essence of my personal sense of space. It closely resembles my own room, but with subtle modifications to create a sense of familiarity and belonging. The design aims to evoke feelings of peace, comfort, practicality, and a touch of style, reflecting my aspirations and desires for a space that aligns with my values and preferences.

By carefully selecting furniture, colors, textures, and accessories, I aim to create an environment that nurtures a sense of tranquility and relaxation. The room design emphasizes both functionality and aesthetics, ensuring that it supports my daily activities and routines while also expressing my personal style. It serves as a reminder that a well-designed room is not only about visual appeal but also about creating a space that resonates with my personality and enhances my overall well-being.

As I continue to refine the design, I seek to strike a balance between functionality, aesthetics, and the emotional connection I seek in my personal space. The room will evolve with me over time, adapting to my changing needs and preferences. It represents not only my dream room but also the dedication and effort I am willing to invest in creating a space that truly feels like home.

Feedback

So for what I had in mind with my idea, I discussed with my lecturer on how I can design my final idea and this is what I had in mind for a Sense of Place. I was advised to try and attempt my hand at focusing the attention on the windows. It can be used as a symbolism to perceive my dreams and aspirations for my future. And by using the warm colors, I can attribute it to my design principle I have chosen for my main coverage of this task.

So for what I had in mind with my idea, I discussed with my lecturer on how I can design my final idea and this is what I had in mind for a Sense of Place. Through the eyes of the viewer, this is the scenery I had chosen to portray. 

Through the design principle I have chosen, Harmony & Unity, I have established my color scheme and balance within hues and lighting for my scene. In my imagined space, I've created a room that reflects my deepest desires. The central area exudes vibrancy, while a dedicated working space fuels my productivity. Two open windows frame the scene, transitioning from morning to late afternoon, symbolizing the time and effort I'm willing to invest in pursuing my dreams. Through those windows, I push myself to thrive and stay motivated.

As daylight fades and the sun moves across the sky, my sanctuary transforms with the changing light. This evolution echoes my dedication and perseverance. The room becomes a constant reminder that success is a result of consistent effort and unwavering commitment. I draw strength from each passing moment, embracing the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.

Through the windows of my imagined room, I glimpse a world full of possibilities. The scenes beyond inspire me to transcend my current circumstances. The evolving view symbolizes the journey I'm embarking upon, where I'm ready to navigate the winding path and shape a future that aligns with my aspirations. Driven by unwavering determination, I'm prepared to seize every opportunity and make a meaningful impact.
