Exercise 1
Design Principles and My Design Process
In this blog post, I will be discussing my design process for three different design principles that I have selected. These principles are Gestalt Theory, Emphasis, and Harmony & Unity. I will be sharing my visual references, idea exploration and description, final design, a short rationale, and a reflection on the overall exercises.
Gestalt Theory
Gestalt theory is a principle of design that is based on the idea that the human brain naturally seeks patterns and order. This principle focuses on how the elements of a design interact with each other to create a unified whole. For my design, I wanted to create an image that would illustrate the principle of Gestalt theory using a simple and clear visual language.
Visual References:
The visual references that inspired my design were the works of the Swiss graphic designer, Josef Muller-Brockmann. I was inspired by his use of simple shapes and color to create powerful and impactful designs.
Idea Exploration and Description:
My idea for the design was to use simple geometric shapes to create a pattern that would form a unified whole. I experimented with different shapes and colors until I found a composition that I was happy with.
Final Design:
Short Rationale:
The design uses simple geometric shapes to illustrate the principle of Gestalt theory. The shapes are arranged in a pattern that forms a unified whole, creating a sense of order and harmony.
Reflection on the Overall Exercises:
Overall, I found the exercises to be challenging but rewarding. They helped me to better understand the principles of design and how to apply them effectively in my own work.
Emphasis
Emphasis is a principle of design that is based on the idea of creating a focal point or hierarchy of information within a design. This principle focuses on how to create a visual hierarchy to guide the viewer's attention to the most important information in the design.
Visual References:
The visual references that inspired my design were the works of the graphic designer, Paul Rand. I was inspired by his use of bold typography and color to create a sense of emphasis and hierarchy.
Idea Exploration and Description:
My idea for the design was to create a poster that would illustrate the principle of emphasis using bold typography and color. I experimented with different typography and color combinations until I found a composition that effectively guided the viewer's attention to the most important information.
Final Design:
Short Rationale:
The design uses bold typography and color to create a sense of emphasis and hierarchy, guiding the viewer's attention to the most important information.
Reflection on the Overall Exercises:
Overall, I found the exercises to be a great way to explore different design principles and to learn how to apply them effectively in my own work.
Harmony & Unity
Harmony and unity are principles of design that focus on creating a sense of balance and cohesiveness within a design. This principle is concerned with how the elements of a design work together to create a unified whole.
Visual References:
The visual references that inspired my design were the works of the Swiss graphic designer, Armin Hofmann. I was inspired by his use of simple shapes and color to create balanced and harmonious compositions.
Idea Exploration and Description:
My idea for the design was to create a poster that would illustrate the principle of harmony and unity using a limited color palette and simple shapes. I experimented with different color combinations and compositions until I found a design that effectively created a sense of balance and unity.
Final Design:
Short Rationale:
The design uses a limited color palette and simple shapes to create a sense of balance and unity, effectively illustrating the principle of harmony and unity.
Reflection on the Overall Exercises:
Overall, I found the exercises to be a valuable learning experience. They helped me to better understand the principles of design and how to apply them effectively in my own work. Through experimentation and exploration, I was able to develop my design skills and create compositions that effectively illustrated each principle.
